Qualifications and Requirements for Appointment

The following requirements must be met in order for an applicant to be commissioned as a Florida notary public:
  • The applicant must be at least 18 years of age.

  • The applicant must be a legal resident of the state of Florida. There is no certain length of time required to establish residency.

  • You may only be commissioned in your legal name (or a nickname of your legal name, i.e. John William Reynolds or J. W. Reynolds or John W. Reynolds).

  • If ever convicted of a felony, the applicant must have civil rights restored (note: contact the Governor’s office for possible exceptions).

  • If not a U.S. citizen, the applicant must present a recorded Declaration of Domicile. If the applicant needs to obtain this form, it is available at the County Clerk’s Office in the county of residence.

  • Submit an application to be appointed a notary public, and pay a $39.00 state appointment fee. The applicant must take the required Oath of Office and must swear or affirm that they have read the notary laws and will obey them.

  • First-time notary applicants must take a required three-hour education course on notary law and procedures. §668.50(b), Fla. Stat. available free of charge from the Florida Department of State

  • Obtain a surety bond in the amount of $7,500, available from the American Association of Notaries.

Only MAILED applications with original signatures are currently accepted (DO NOT FAX). Your notary application also contains your personal information (S.S. #, D.L., DOB and address).
